Model Aweng Ade-Chuol kisses his wife on Elle UK cover
South Sudanese model Aweng Ade-Chuol appeared on the cover of Elle UK magazine in a passionate embrace with his wife.
The US-based catwalk star married nail entrepreneur Alexus Ade-Chuol in Manhattan shortly before New York City was locked down.
Ade-Chuol, who covers the January issue, spoke about how their relationship led to abuse from people in the South Sudanese community, leading him to attempt suicide.
She said: “It’s really confusing to me, and I’m still dealing with it. We got married and the whole world, literally my whole community, wanted me to pass, in some way.
“A few months later, I tried (to kill myself). It was really absurd, because subconsciously I felt that maybe I was exhausted from the fact that we had gotten married.
“It’s always a discussion now, like, ‘How dare she marry a woman? You can’t control what people say, and there were tabloids and newspapers in Sudan… It was a whole.
“To me, it was like, with the political climate in there, do you really think my marriage is the most important thing in your life right now?”
“It was sad, because it was the happiest day of my life, and they couldn’t let me enjoy it.”

In June, she revealed in an Instagram post that she had attempted suicide two months earlier and spent three days in intensive care.
But Ade-Chuol, who was born in Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya, told supporters she was “in a much better place now”.
Addressing the decision to share her story widely, she told Elle UK: “Young children came in and said, ‘I thought about it… And I’m like, OK, OK now.
“I can’t answer everyone. I had to make a general announcement to say, “Hey guys, I announced what happened to me, I guess there are things that could happen in your life too, but I’m still learning. I need to get around this thing that I went through so I don’t know how to help you, but here are some suggestions: therapy and self-acceptance. “
She also discussed her work with Beyonce on her critically acclaimed visual album Black Is King in July.
“Every girl’s dream is to work with Queen B, and it was my childhood dream,” she said.
The January issue of Elle UK goes on sale December 1.
