LMN Architects is currently seeking outstanding candidates for the position of Shop Assistant. The ideal candidate is passionate about manufacturing as a core part of the design process, has a keen interest in emerging technologies in architecture, and wants to drive the effective use of manufacturing within LMN.

LMN’s fabrication department is becoming an increasingly important part of the LMN practice by: assisting teams with architectural models, producing architectural mock-ups, fabricating large-scale installations, and creating office engagement opportunities with the making. The role of the Workshop Assistant is to support the Workshop Manager by directly assisting project teams with manufacturing efforts, assisting with workshop maintenance, documenting manufacturing activities, and assisting plan and coordinate manufacturing awareness activities.

LMN employees work in the office on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Mondays and Fridays are flexible workdays that allow employees to work from the office, from home, or any other location of their choosing. Given the duties and responsibilities of this role, most of the work is done in the office and is not as conducive to remote work as other roles. Core working hours Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. allow employees to determine the working hours that best suit their personal commitments, travel patterns and work preferences.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Store Manager in the daily maintenance and operation of the store.
  • Assist project teams with modeling and manufacturing needs.
  • Supervise the activities of people working in the workshop to provide assistance and support a safe workspace.
  • Document and blog manufacturing-related projects and activities.
  • Participate in and can help lead manufacturing awareness activities such as trainings, presentations and public installations.
  • Participate in discussions regarding the growth and integration of manufacturing into LMN practice.
  • Ensure continuity of store access and support in the absence of the store manager.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as required.

Qualifications:

  • Experience with carpentry equipment and tools and familiarity with safe operating procedures.
  • Proficiency with digital manufacturing equipment including laser cutters, 3D printers and CNC routers.
  • Able to interpret architectural drawings and sketches to develop large scale models or models.
  • Excellent craftsmanship and attention to detail, whatever the scale.
  • Proficiency in Rhino, Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite required.
  • Knowledge of Grasshopper and Revit desired.
  • Able to multi-task across multiple projects and responsibilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, organizational and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a highly collaborative team environment.
  • Minimum 2 years completed in an architecture program or related field.
  • Because this role involves regularly moving heavy materials, the ability to lift 60 lbs. regularly is necessary.
