Runway model JoAni Johnson, 67, shares the secret to her gorgeous glow
It seems like every day a new ingredient is introduced as the more powerful when it comes to skin care. As the Beauty Director, my inbox is cluttered with arguments about products that make lofty claims, such as “instantly brightens” or “removes wrinkles”. But whenever I find myself in the presence of my elders and we are talking about beauty, there are only a handful of products that they have trusted for years. And petroleum jelly has always been a staple, especially for many older black women just like JoAni Johnson.
Johnson is a 67-year-old model and she fully embraces her “ageless” look. The gray-haired stunner walked her first runway at 65 and has since racked up fashion credits, including strutting in designer Ozwald Boateng’s show at the iconic Apollo Theater and appearing in Pyer Moss fashion campaigns. and Fenty.
Standing confidently at 5’4 and a half inches (without heels), I couldn’t help but be wowed by Johnson’s long silver locks, super smooth skin, and powerful aura. Even though she started her career on the catwalks later in her life, she is well aware of how the beauty industry can promote products that don’t work. His business advice is simple: “Tell the truth.
“Not everything is going to suit you well. All products except petroleum jelly will not work. So much is in the news, and especially when you have a captive audience and you tell them it’s going to make you look younger, and it won’t, ”she adds.
One of Johnson’s earliest beauty memories is watching his great-grandmothers do their beauty regimen in the mirror. They used petroleum jelly as a moisturizer and makeup remover, along with cold cream. So it makes perfect sense for her to partner with the brand for their new #ListenToYourMoms campaign.
Having seen how well old petroleum jelly has worked for the women in his family for generations, Johnson swears by it today. “I happen to use products, both on my skin and my hair, that contain shea butter. But then I smear my [skin] with petroleum jelly. Because the shea butter is absorbed by my skin. So I need something to put on top to retain moisture, ”she explains.
That being said, you will find me applying Shea Butter and HanaHana Beauty Vaseline every night before bed.
